Shodhan chikitsa enables purification and detoxification of the entire body. This is done using massage with medicinal oils and herbs, along with a comprehensive diet program. This treatment is usually done over a period of 15 days. The routine includes body massage, intake of Snehapanam (medicated ghee) on an empty stomach, Nasyam (medicated oil administered through the nose), Virechanam (purging the toxins and other waste from the body using a herbal medicine), Snehavasthi (enema with herbal oil), Dhara (steady flow of luke warm oil applied to the body), Pizhichil (a combination of massage with herbal oil and heat treatment), Njavarakizhi (massage with a concoction of herbs, milk and rice, tied up in a round shaped, warm cloth bag), Karnapooranam (5 to 10 minutes of applying medicated herbal fumes to the ears ), Tharpanam (cleaning process for the eye) and Sirovasthi in which lukewarm oil is applied on the head. This is followed by steam bath, herbal drinks and a course of internal herbal medicines.
