With over 4000 items on display, the museum is divided into three distinct styles: Malabar on the ground floor, Kochi on the first floor, and Travancore on the second floor. The Folklore Museum is a non-profit organization underwent a seven-year construction process, involving the tireless efforts of 60 skilled builders and mural artists. The museum’s exquisite wooden structure serves as a veritable treasure trove, offering a glimpse into Kerala’s rich culture expressed through various forms of art and dance.

Within its walls, you’ll encounter a captivating array of artifacts, including traditional jewelry, sacred artworks, musical instruments, and manuscripts brimming with ancient medicinal and astrological knowledge that still retains the essence of days gone by. The museum’s architecture is adorned with remarkable elements, such as the entrance crafted from 16th-century wood carvings sourced from Kerala and Tamil Nadu temples. The front door showcases a splendid manichitratazhu, a traditional Kerala door lock. As you explore the Malabar-style building, you’ll notice intricately pierced wooden windows near the entrance, adding to its charm.
Ascending to the first floor, named Kalithattu and designed in the Cochin architectural style, you’ll encounter a fascinating collection of costumes from various traditional and ritual dances of Kerala, including Theyyam, Kathakali, Ottanthullal, and Mohiniyattam. The second floor, known as Kanjadalam or lotus petal, features breathtaking mural paintings and a translucent ceiling composed of sixty frames.
