Allergies are known to manifest in several ways and may range from wheezing to sneezing, scratchy skin & hives, itchy eyes and runny nose. There are can be multi-triggers like cigarette smoke, dust mites, animal dander, strong perfumes, firewood smoke, incense sticks, etc. It can even be seasonal, causing severe bouts and require medical attention in extreme cases.
About allergens
Sudden flare-up might be experienced on contact and the symptoms may persist until allergens are present. Allergies are of 3 types, contact, medicine & food and airborne. Precautionary measures are suggested by Ayurveda to curtail allergies and boost immunity.
Ayurveda on allergies
Genetics is one major cause for allergies. Other reasons stated in Ayurveda are Ama presence and weak Agni caused by undigested food within the gastrointestinal tract or weak digestive fire, due to toxins including Bykruti or body imbalance.
Ayurveda therapies for allergy attacks
Neti Pot: Regular application, twice a day. It slackens Kapha or earth & water energy within sinuses to offer relief.
Nasya: Sesame oil to be infused with eucalyptus or camphor and applied on nostril.
Trikatu: This herbal compound uses Pippali (long pepper), ginger and black pepper to establish digestive fire (Agni).
Dietary restrictions: Avoid meats, dairy products, processed foods, wheat, sugar, including those heavy in nature to reduce Agni.
Dietary recommendations: Ayurveda recommends food having healing powers and reduce Kapha.
Spices: They have warming properties and should be added to beverage or meals.
Tea: Tea helps to clear indigestion problems and induce Agni.
Mild laxative: One such is Triphala created from herbs like Haritaki, Bibtaki and Amalaki to cleanse digestive tract, thereby improving bowel movement.
Breathing exercise: It is necessary to perform Pranayam every morning to improve health.
